Houses built before closets were a thing
The North End is Victorians and early colonials. The West Side is multi-families. The millyard is brick converted to condominiums. A great deal of this housing predates the built-in closet entirely, and where a closet was added later it was carved out of a corner at whatever angle the existing framing allowed.
So in Manchester we build more wardrobes, armoires and full-wall built-ins than closet systems — freestanding storage for rooms that never had any, scribed to plaster that is not plumb and floors that are not level. That is work a factory cannot ship you in a flat box.
